1 These Tone on Tone Highlights for Winter

"Right now I'm definitely seeing a lot of tone on tone highlights being done," says Ariel Munoz of Cutler NYC. "People are moving away from pieces that pop, which we all really enjoy in the summer, and are now wanting highlights that compliment their natural hair color—think Kim Kardashian's latest color change."

"Some of my clients think that highlights aren't necessary in the winter, but I disagree so much with that," Munoz says. "During the winter months we lose the added warmth the sun gives our skin, but highlights are a way for us to add that warmth back into our face simply by having contrasting colors framing it."

Expect to continue to see baby pink shades like this but in a more muted way for winter, according to Munoz (and shown here on stylist Sarah Potempa). To keep your hair hue looking its best: be sure to lather up with a pink shampoo to help your color last.

4 These Warm Undertones for Winter

Forget about that bluish brown you saw all over your Insta feed last year, and switch up your dark-brunette hair with warm undertones this winter. Warmer hair is more flattering for warmer skin tones, says Munoz (like Shay's!), rather than cooler-toned, ashier hues that tend to suit lighter skin tones best.

Red is never not in, says Cassandra Kaeding, Redken Brand Ambassador and celebrity colorist at Mare West Hollywood. Not red yet but planning on making a winter hair color change? Stick to copper undertones instead of burgundy (which can end up making your color appear more purple than red).

Okay, of course, brown is a super obvious hair color trend for the winter, but this time around, it’s all about adding depth. Try out a chestnut brown color (aka a brunette shade with coppery undertones). Don’t forget to stock up on sulfate-free shampoo—which is a nonnegotiable for keeping your color fresh and vibrant.

7 This Strawberry-Blonde Hair Color for Winter

For any blondes who want to switch up their hair color this winter without going for a major change, consider this super-pretty strawberry blonde. Just keep in mind that you’ll probably want to start on the subtler side, since adding more red is much easier than taking it out.

Far from the severe ombré of years past, this caramel, melted hue is soft and adds a bit of brightness to the face. This shade is especially great for naturally brunette clients who want to give their color a little refresh.
