[Warning: spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy season 16, episode 6, “Whistlin’ Past the Graveyard,” ahead.]
This is Grey’s Anatomy’s fifth season without Derek Shepherd, but despite the fact that time heals all wounds, some fans are still grieving (hi, it’s me, I’m “some fans”). The big question has been whether or not Meredith will find another soul mate—and if she even should. But on Thursday night’s new episode, DeLuca managed to prove that he’s totally worthy of Mer’s love, and it seems like there’s hope for her to have a happy family without McDreamy after all…and those of us who still miss Derek will just have to be okay with that.
After seasons of doing legally questionable things in the name of medicine, Meredith finally ended up in jail after missing her community service. While she was there, DeLuca picked up the slack at her house and with her kids, which is a tall order for a guy who’s a relatively new BF.

So what did DeLuca do? He told Zola a story he’d heard about Derek saving a patient with an inoperable tumor, and she finally came around.
DeLuca is seriously the man. He went to literal jail for Meredith so she can be there for her kids, and when she can’t be, there his is, taking care of them so she doesn’t have to worry. He helps her daughter keep her dad’s memory alive, and he’s not bad to look at. What more could Meredith want?
Just one episode ago, Mer was wondering if DeLuca would or should be a long-term thing for her, and he totally proved that he’s up for the task. He was there for her kids while she was gone and knows exactly how to talk to Zola about her dad without having any weird jealous feelings involved.
If Meredith is going to end up with anyone besides Derek, she could do a lot worse than DeLuca. And as irreplaceable as McDreamy will always be, she deserves to have a happy next chapter in her life, including someone to share it all with.
At least, until the next plane crash, bomb scare, or natural disaster anyway.
